With many research I have done on the topic of finding jobs and my personal experiences, I found it is more and more interesting and necessary to figure out this important and serious condition. I believe it is very significant and helpful for me to know more about the situation of finding a job in business and management fields as an international student. That is why I want to do more research on this topic.
Personal narrative
No matter who you are, if you want to set up your foot into society, finding a job is the first step you need to do. However, after the global economic crisis of 2008, much of the world has experienced falling incomes and sharply rising unemployment. Under this depressed economic climate, fields of business and economy would be especially hard in a job market. In addition, as an international student with a language issue and different cultural backgrounds, it will be much harder to establish themselves in society. I am one of the international students who prefer to major in management and want to find a job few years later in America. With many research I have done on this topic and my personal experience, I found it is more and more interesting and necessary to figure out this important and serious condition. I believe it is very significant and helpful for me to know more about the situation of finding a job in business and management fields as an international student.
Why is it important to learn this specific condition of finding a job? First, from an international students perspective, one of the reasons why students study abroad is to find a better job than who just graduated in their original country. Having a job after you graduate is a kind of reward or certification which proves student’s effort and investment. As for me, if I have a good job here in future, I will be very proud of that and feel satisfied with myself. Second, in the fields of business and management, good practical ability, such as communication skill, organization skill and awesome leadership, is a dominating factor of applying knowledge even if it compares to excellent academic intellectual. Knowledge is available but it is up to ourselves to actually apply those knowledge and that is a bigger hurdle for human. With variable economic situations, it is more important to master the art of controlling what you want and grasp technique of moving with the time. It is not hard to imagine that the person will be fired if he or she is only capable of economic theories without ability of creating new model based on latest monetary policy and stock market.
Moreover, I, an international student, eager to do more research about job outlook because I realized serious and difficult external environment of finding a job in business fields. According to the website named Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate of America in past year still reaches up to more than 7 percent out of total people. Credit intermediation and related financial activities opportunities of employment declined by 9,000 over the month. As we can see, we’re in for a prolonged period of very high unemployment. In the brief research from MyVisaJobs website, the numbers of H1B visa (Specialty Occupations/ Temporary Worker Visas) released in past years only reach to 84.65 percent of 2012. Additionally, in the current growing sentiment of anti-immigrant, fewer and fewer international employers will be hired in fulltime as a trend in future. Furthermore, to take the Krannert school of management as an example, around 10 percent of Fall 2013 undergraduate students will choose this college. Roughly, 17 percent of them came from other countries besides America. All in all, large number of international students in business and economy fields who will share with fewer and fewer positions in future shows that this condition become to a universal problem and need to be figured out recently. Back to myself, if I want to outstand from the large number of students who share the same difficult condition with me, I need to do more research in order to be more familiar with current job situation and prepare early to successfully face the problem I will meet.
The issue of the difficulties of finding a job in business and management fields as international students is a big deal for me as well. As one of the international students who are still in undecided major, I spent whole semester last year deeply thinking about any factors towards a few majors I prefer to study. The job issue of major in management field become the biggest stumbling block of whether I should choose it. In my opinion, rather than major in engineering, computer science or accounting etc, major of management is too broad and does not have specific professional knowledge. Besides that, as an international student who do not have advantages in term of language and western cultural background as me, even I could not easily blend in with American friends surrounding, let alone finding a good job. However, through the research I did and career planning course I took last semester, major in management still was my best choice given my value, strengths and my personal interests. As a result, having a clear global perspective toward my future job becomes one of the most important things for me. Not only researchable, worthy for lots of people this topic is, but also it helps me better prepare and make a clear plan for my future.
In order to proceed with my research on this topic, I have listed a handful of question. I want to know what the basic job requirements of economy and business fields are, because different fields of jobs have different kinds of requirements such as people’s characteristics, strengths and quality and so forth. In addition, I would like to know advantages and disadvantages of international employees who are in economy and management fields. Other than that, I am going to stress more on what preparation of international college students can do for the sake of having a better competitiveness to fill the position of economy and management fields.
In conclusion, according to the importance of finding a job from two perspectives, the austerity of current job situation in business and management fields as an international student and my personal experience, this issue cannot be ignored at all. With three specific questions I listed, those further and deeper thoughts will sketch an overall understanding of the job situation of international students in business and management fields and help me to figure out this tough and complicated problems. It is very crucial for us to learn, and we should be the ones who are controlling and acting proactively to defend our position of job finding.
