In order to have a clear picture related to the situation of finding a management field job as an international student, I interviewed Tamara Clarkson who is a career services consultant who works in Center for Career Opportunities (CCO) at Purdue. She is also available to assist students with developing a greater understanding of themselves as a career professional and the career opportunities that a Purdue University provides.

Finding a job has become a difficult question for everyone who is preparing for entering the society. As international students with a language issue and different cultural backgrounds, having a content job relating to their majors is much more difficult than domestic students. In order to have a clear picture related to the situation of finding a management field job as an international student, I interviewed Tamara Clarkson who is a career services consultant who works in Center for Career Opportunities (CCO) at Purdue. She is also available to assist students with developing a greater understanding of themselves as a career professional and the career opportunities that a Purdue University provides.
When I met Tamara Clarkson in Young Hall on a chilly day, she gave me a sweet smile with the warmth of her welcome. We sat down in a semi-closed study room in the first floor office of CCO. After she knew the reason I came there, she appreciated that it was incredibly good for students to prepare early determining their future career. I told her that I wanted to major in management and have some work experiences in America a few years later after I graduated from Purdue. After she knew my decision, we set about a pleasant interview.
Considering the facts that most of students always ignore the view and thoughts from the company they wanted to enter in hiring people, I inquired what qualities employers are seeking from applicants. Without a pause, Tamara directly pointed out four basic skills that most companies would pay high attention to wonder whether or not this applicants have had based on looking through their resume. She stressed that problem-solving skill was one of the biggest things that employers looked for. She added that the abilities of working with others as a team, taking risks and creative thinking are all the necessary factors which were put into a high position in looking for hiring new people in each job fields. In addition, Tamara believed that the specific job area had specific and different requirements in finding new employees. She took my major as an example by stating that the job applicant in the management field had to work hard in developing their leadership, communication and organization skills. But those skills didn’t highly recommend toward the students who studied in the college of science. She concluded every employer wanted to hire workers who can think for company at first. Additionally, people who not only can do their assigned complex tasks but can enhance, refine and even reinvent their works by bringing something extra ideas have preponderances than others. Her answer let me clearly know what the qualities that companies seek for are and gave me a direction of how I need to develop myself.
After discussion of abilities that employers look for, to change the subject, I asked the difference in finding a job among management and other fields. Since her professional area is science, she explained apologetically that only general ideas she could gave to me. Tamara emphasized that the biggest advantage when finding a job as a student in management major is flexibility. Students can go into different area in management degree, and that allowed students to pursue a lot of different types of internships. Since that, she thought it gave students amount of opportunities to develop the area of students’ own expertise by working in different companies and joining different organizations. She discussed that due to the management degree's aim for developing an extensive array of knowledge within the student, the graduates do not necessarily need to strictly peruse a management job. There are a few of the related job available to management majors because no matter what kind of company it is, it do need lots of manager to help them to operate the whole firm professional. However, when I asked about the disadvantages about the management field, surprisingly, she gave me a negative answer by stating that she could not find any of disadvantages in finding job in management field.
I liked the answer Tamara gave to me because she absolutely enhanced my confidence in choosing management major in next semester. We made a deep eye contact with each other with a big smile and continued our interview. The last information I wanted to know from her is about the preparation during the college life and the next step I can do to develop myself. I told her what I had found about difficult situation in finding a job as an international student in management field. She strongly agreed that and told me there are two important things I should done in the next three years before I graduate. She pointed out that one of the best ways to work around this problem is to get internships. In order to help me understand the steps I need follow before I want to find an internship, she opened the computer in front of us to search and explain some key words I need familiar. With her kindly help, I figured out the meaning of CPT and OPT and also have some basic knowledge about H1b visa. Besides that, Tamara gave me few websites with some successful examples to let me know much more details about how to find an internship as international students in America. She also recommended me to make an appointment with ISS staff to discuss more about visa information and the steps of beginning my American career.
After she told me about the importance of getting internship in America and few things I need to figure out before I want to work here, she continued to talk about the second thing students should have done within college life—networking. Networking is really important because more than 80% of jobs are actually found through networking. She told me if you use the networking way like LinkedIn you can find people who are in the field that you wanted to go into, because whenever you contact with Purdue alumina who is in the field that you want to pursue, they will think of you whenever the jobs come up. They will highly recommend you whenever the supervisor think that whether you are the best fit one. As she considered my major, she told me to type management, business, Purdue University or Krannert school as advance search when I use LinkedIn in future. In addition, Tamara also taught me how to start a conversation when I want to contact particular Purdue alumina after I looked through his or her company’s recruitment information.
The discussion was so involving that I almost lost track of time. I saw that I had actually taken up more time than I had bargained for. Thanks to Tamara Clarkson, I was able to learn the qualities of teamwork, risk taking and creative thinking are important abilities that employer seeking for. I also had a plan in my mind about enhancing my networking during my college life to better prepare for my future job application.
