introduction
In order to prepare for seeking a good job after graduating from Purdue University as the first step of entering the society, I found a few articles regarding this topic but with slightly different focuses to help me to get this picture clear. They discussed the general environment of a recent job market, situation for international job applicants and qualifications of good employees in the management field. All these sources I found greatly contributed to my research and were helpful for my preparation for my future job application.
LITERATURE REVIEW
How to find a job as international students in the management and business field can be a significant issue for college students who studied in America and major in the management.
In order to be more familiar with the recent job market, I felt finding more sources determining the job outlook and tendency of general working environment in future is necessary. According to Johnson(2013), employment of business and management field is projected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations. She founded that job security remained high, with 47 percent of respondents rating their job “relatively stable” and 39 percent “very stable.” However, the most respondents of boss and manager in different area said that they had not made staffing changes recently and will do not foresee doing so in the next 12 months which means small staffs will take more responsibilities and get higher salaries. Even it is true that there will not have some big employee changes recently, according to the article of Outlook of Some Business Career(2012.May), the field of business and management does not matter a lot. For examples, in 2011, accounting majors received the most job offers before graduating. Moreover, as new companies form and organizations expand their operations, they will need more all kinds of managers to oversee and administer their programs. In conclusion, the job outlook of management and business field still stand in a high level as a whole.
After gaining the basic information about the job outlook in past years, I read another article which focused on the situation of seeking a full-time job in America as international students. According to International Students Guide(n.d.), international students have to deal with a few special issues but also come with special advantages in the process of seeking for a job in U.S. The common disadvantages like unfamiliar with US business culture, less fluent English skill and completed process in applying Non-Immigrant Temporary Work Visa all contribute to the difficulty that international students may experience in trying to find employment in the U.S. However, doing more practice, joining more clubs which hold in American students and finding more information before you send your resume could overcome the problems that students always met. In addition, foreign background also can be leveraged very effectively to set apart and differentiate students from others. The following three aspects like bilingual abilities, cultural background and period special experiences can be used as strengths to let students stand out and sold their self. There are lots of tips and advices for international students in terms of finding job resources, preparing resume, having interview and so on as well. After I looked through this handout, I found that as long as international student begin early to prepare for competing in the job market and take advantage from their special, it will not be a problem to seek for a good job in America.
The former articles stress the advantages and disadvantages for international students as job applicants, with the solving of problems and some tips and advises in job market as well. However, as the topic is more focus on the management and business field, I wanted to do more research on this area. Bureau of Labor Statistics website gave people specific descriptions of several qualifications and characteristics regard to being as a good manager. In the section of “how to become one” in management area, a few qualifications and requirements are mostly same. The bachelor degree at least are required at first. Secondly, relating work experiences in demonstrating an ability to lead other workers and manage services and programs are highly recommend. Thirdly, such leadership skills, communication skills, organizational skills and problem-solving skills are important qualities that good worker need to satisfied. In addition, different kinds of job have different specific requirements. For example, the job of public relations and fundraising managers prefer employee who have Accredited Business Communicator credential which kind of certification demonstrate a level of professional competency to prospective employers. Human Resources Managers’ decisions have a significant impact on workers or operations; therefore, strength in decision-making was put in the high position. As an Administrative Services Managers, a master's degree in business administration or a related field can enhance a manager’s opportunities to advance to higher level positions in their firm. In brief, developing yourself in diverse areas for the sake of meeting the demanding should be done as early as possible.
In conclusion, according to the three articles, I have a clear picture related to the situation of finding a management field job as international students. With the good job outlook in management field in past years and some advantages for international students, if we satisfied the requirements of our dream job, successfully finding a full- time job after we graduate in America is possible for everyone. However, I am still curious about what primary factors are for company in deciding whether or not to hire international employees in management and business fields and how to get a good preparation during the college. As a result, in order to confirm the authenticity of this topic, I decide to do more research in different perspective like from a company and university and have an interview with Center for Career Opportunities in Purdue University as a next step. Personally, it is always nice to prepare in advance.
